COM 562: Crisis Communication in Global Context
Fall 2016 – Washington State University – Professor Derek Scheips
Crisis Communication in Global Context helped me develop public information skills by creating a comprehensive Crisis Communication Plan (CCP). Over the course of the semester I developed the following skillsets:
- Expertise in crisis communication, literature, issues, and concepts.
- Ability to adapt best practices and develop a crisis communication plan.
- Ability to develop and execute crisis messaging and media management.
Crisis Communication Plan Project
The foundation of this course was the semester long CCP project. This project required us to select an organization and develop a comprehensive crisis communication plan that would be implantable immediately.
I chose to create my plan for the Kubota Garden which is in Seattle, Washington. I selected the garden because I was already volunteering as their newsletter designer and recognized they had a need. This group proved several challenges – most notably their structure – which required customizing established crisis communication tactics. The plan I created included the following sections:
- Signed Endorsement
- Introduction
- Crisis Threats / Types
- Communication Team
- Stakeholders
- Communication Response Strategies
- Working with the Media
- Social Media Plan
- Post Crisis – Evaluation

Final Presentation
At the end of the semester we were tasked with creating a brief “pitch” to the organization for which it was created. In my presentation, I successfully outline all CCP components, explain their value and how the Kubota Garden will benefit from implementing it.
